Second Day of ITA's Successful for Men's Tennis

Second Day of ITA's Successful for Men's Tennis

SAN ANTONIO, Tx - Three members of the Men's Tennis Team will represent Austin College on the final day of competition in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships tomorrow.

Preston Glasscock slashed his way through C-Draw Singles as the 4th-seeded player in the tournament.  Glasscock picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Boles (UMHB) and a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Cruz (Let), dropping only 5 games.  He will face the 1-seeded player in the draw from Schreiner tomorrow morning at 9am.

Josh Granberry started well in his Consolation Round of 16 match against a tough opponent from McMurry, but one break of serve in each set was the difference as the Freshman fell 6-3, 6-4.

Hardy would have a better match-up in his first competition against a TLU Bulldog, dictating the point well on his way to a 6-2, 6-1 victory.  In the quarterfinals, he faced a competitive opponent in Manuel Brown from Trinity University.

Hardy grinded out the first set 6-4, forcing errors off of his opponent's 1-handed backhand and ripping big forehands to both corners.  Brown would make the second set look easy, taking it 6-0.  Another super-tiebreaker for the match was the fate for yet another 'Roos tennis player as Hardy was unable to consolidate mini-breaks and turn them into holds.  Brown advanced to the semi-finals over Hardy 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7).

William Crouch and Zach Bomar were both able to pick up straight-set wins in their first round, but Crouch would fall 6-1, 6-1 to East Texas Baptist University, and Bomar would fall in a super-tiebreaker after dropping the first set 6-0 to Hardin-Simmons, 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6).

Doubles would prove to be the most successful Austin College has ever had.  After winning their first match the night before, Granberry and Ambulo would face off against the 3rd-seeded team in the draw from Trinity, Adam Krull and Matt Tyre.  Krull and Tyre would win 8-0, but not before Granberry/Ambulo earned some respect against the mighty Tigers.

Glasscock and Morgan would fall to the 3rd-seeded team in the B-Draw from UMHB 8-2 in the first round.  The two just have not had enough time together on the court and could not get their bearings.

Kubena and Crouch teamed up again for the second time in two tournaments, upsetting the 8th-seeded team in the B-Draw in the first round 8-3, then following it up with an abbreviated 6-2 set win over LeTourneau.  The duo would fall against the 2nd-seeded Trinity Tigers 6-0, but not before reaching the quarterfinals for the first time in either of their careers.

The 4th-seeded Meendsen and Hardy played masterful doubles on their way the 3-straight wins and the semi-finals of the B-Draw.  With wins of 8-2, 6-2, and 6-0 over Concordia (Tex.), Hardin-Simmons, and Schreiner, Hardy/Meendsen face another team from Hardin-Simmons that knocked-out the 1st-seeded team in the tournament from Southwestern.

Play begins tomorrow at 9am with Glasscock facing Albright from Schreiner.
