Comets Defeat 'Roos 7-2 to Close Out Weekend Matches
AC prevents doubles sweep; several courts finish with close decisions
RICHARDSON, TX – The Austin College Men's Tennis Team dodged the rain this afternoon long enough to compete against the Comets from The University of Texas at Dallas. Although UTD won the match, Austin College continues to improve and put together solid results as they close in on the conference tournament.
Both Coaches decided to start the match with singles instead of traditionally beginning with doubles, and the 'Roos battled valiantly to keep the match hanging in the balance going into doubles competition. However, the Comets would clinch a decision with 5 singles points before the second phase of the match even began.
David Smith was the lone Kangaroo to score a point for Austin College in singles competition, winning 6-2, 6-1 at Line 5. However, both Erik Meendsen and Jeff Kubena were a few points away from splitting singles with a young and tough UTD squad, falling 6-7 (4), 7-5, 1-0 (7) and 6-4, 7-5 respectively.
"It didn't matter that the result was decided," Head Coach Ryan Dodd said. "They still fought because every match is an opportunity for us to see a new opponent and measure our team's progress. That's tough to do for some, but not for this team. Not for these guys."
Meendsen and Cedric Ambulo came out determined to make it two doubles wins in a row against a solid Line 1 tandem. After falling behind 1-4, the young duo won 5 straight games and rolled to an 8-5 win.
The Austin College Men's Tennis Team is back in action this Friday, April 17th at home against Texas A&M – Texarkana. Matches start at 6:00pm.
