SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker at home on Friday evening in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, falling 3-2 to No. 18-ranked Southwestern University as the Pirates scored in the closing minutes of competition. The 'Roos are now 3-7-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Southwestern dominated possession in the opening half, finishing with 11 shots to four for the 'Roos, but Austin College was able to keep the Pirates off the scoreboard and the teams went into halftime knotted at 0-0. Austin College wasted little time breaking through in the second half, as Louis Catchpole tallied for the sixth time this season, finding the back of the net in the 48th minute to put the 'Roos ahead 1-0.
The Pirates evened things up at the 59:10 mark on a goal by Luca Cipleu, and three minutes later Lucas Marino scored to put Southwestern on top 2-1. That lead wouldn't last long, however, as Sam Spencer found the equalizer at the 65:15 mark. It appeared the game would end with the teams square at two goals apiece, but the Pirates earned a foul just outside the box with a minute and a half left, and Michael Grimm managed to score the game-winner on the free kick to make it a 3-2 final.
Southwestern finished the game with a 23-to-17 shot advantage, and Jayson Baldwin made five saves for Austin College while Jackson Tucker had five stops for the Pirates.
