Hardin-Simmons Tops 'Roo Men's Soccer

ABILENE, Texas - The Austin College men's soccer team fell in an early hole and was unable to recover, dropping a 3-1 road decision at Hardin-Simmons University on Wednesday evening. The 'Roos are now 1-2 overall on the year.

ABILENE, Texas - The Austin College men's soccer team fell in an early hole and was unable to recover, dropping a 3-1 road decision at Hardin-Simmons University on Wednesday evening. The 'Roos are now 1-2 overall on the year.

Hardin-Simmons got on the board early, with Jakob Fiol scoring in the fourth minute of action to put the Cowboys ahead 1-0. Austin College started to take control the rest of the half, out-shooting HSU 12-6 in the opening 45 minutes, but the 'Roos were unable to find the equalizer before the break. Fiol doubled the Hardin-Simmons lead in the 63rd minute of action, but Austin College was finally able to break through and cut it to a 2-1 game on a tally by Jonah Ferrante, assisted by Sam Spencer, in the 67th minute. 

However, the Cowboys earned a penalty kick just three minutes later, with Jerron Garcia finding the back of the net to make it 3-1 and the 'Roos couldn't chip away at the deficit in the game's final 20 minutes of action. Austin College finished with a 19-to-15 shot advantage, including 7-to-5 in shots-on-goal. Jayson Baldwin had a pair of saves for the 'Roos, while Griffin Cardwell made six stops for the Cowboys. 

Up next for the 'Roos is the team's home opener on Friday, as they play host to UT-Dallas at 7:00 p.m.
