'Roo Men Draw with Southwestern

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College men's soccer team battled to a hard-fought, 1-1 double overtime draw with Southwestern University on Friday night. The 'Roos are now 3-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

It was a defensive battle throughout, with neither team putting a shot on goal in the first 30 minutes of action. Southwestern managed to strike first in the 32nd minute, with Jake Swonke corralling a long punt from his keeper Ryan Benner and, after beating one defender, finding the net to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead at halftime. Southwestern held a 7-3 edge in shots in the opening frame.

Austin College equalized early in the second half as the 'Roos drew a penalty kick in the 57th minute, and Phillip Le stepped up and blasted the shot home for his fourth tally of the season, making it a 1-1 game. Each team had multiple opportunities to find the game winner down the stretch, but the two sides would head to overtime.

Once again both teams had chances for the golden goal, with Austin College's Garrett Matacale's shot from 20 yards hitting the crossbar and Thomas Quick's follow up being saved point blank by Benner, and the game would end in a draw.

Southwestern finished the match with a 20-18 shot advantage. Joseph Khalaf made five saves for Austin College, and Benner made four for the Pirates.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
