Men's Hoops Falls to Trinity

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College men's basketball team got off to a cold start offensively and was never able to recover, falling to visiting Trinity University 82-67 on Saturday evening in Hughey Gym. The 'Roos are now 5-10 overall and 1-6 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Austin College shot just 23.5% from the field in the first half while Trinity made 50% overall and 54.5% from beyond the arc to build a 43-25 halftime lead, as the Tigers jumped out to a 17-3 lead and the 'Roos were unable to put much of a dent into that margin the rest of the way. The Tigers went on top 34-12 on a three by Jacob Harvey with 5:39 left in the opening half before Austin College was able to close the gap a bit to 36-21 following six straight points from Ethan Pearce and a trey from Kidus Getenet. Harvey knocked down another trey to make it 43-23 before Tristan Dick made a pair of free throws with no time left on the clock to cut it to an 18 point game at the break.

The lead surged back to 20 early in the second half, and Austin College was unable to get the deficit under 15 during the final 20 minutes of action. Trinity's lead grew to as many as 26 points with 14:54 left to play, and the Tigers would finish the game hitting 11-of-20 three pointers and knocking down better than 47% from the field overall. Austin College got 42 points from its bench in the loss, while also hitting 25-of-29 free throw attempts. However, the Tigers outscored the 'Roos 31-to-13 in points off of turnovers, and the 'Roos made just 6-of-19 from long distance and connected on just 30% from the field as a team.

Tristan Dick made 10-of-12 free throws to match Jackson Rennie for the team high with 12 points, as Rennie hit 4-of-6 treys in defeat. Ocie Berry chipped in eight points and five rebounds, and Pearce finished with six points and six boards. Harvey led Trinity with 19 points, knocking down 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.
