Men's Hoops Holds Off McMurry

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College men's basketball team built a 50-38 halftime lead but had to hold off a late charge by visiting McMurry University on Friday, topping the War Hawks 89-86 to improve to 2-2 overall on the year.

Tristan Dick led the 'Roos with 17 points, as Austin College put five players into double digits in the scoring column in the victory. The 'Roos shot 58.5% from the field in the victory, compared to 40.6% shooting for McMurry. The War Hawks did manage to outscore the 'Roos 22-8 at the free throw line, and hounded Austin College into 23 turnovers against just 13 of their own. Dick was 8-of-10 from the field, and Jason Jones made 7-of-10 shots on his way to 14 points and seven rebounds for Austin College.

After taking a 50-38 halftime lead, the 'Roos saw the margin trimmed to 52-48 less than three minutes into the second half. Jones made two buckets to push the lead to 66-58 with 11:06 to play, but the War Hawks cut it to a 66-63 game two minutes later. Nate Williams drilled a triple to push Austin College's lead back to double figures at 81-71 with 3:25 on the clock, but the War Hawks kept battling back, with Remy Minor hitting a three to make it 87-82 with 37 seconds remaining, and McMurry cut it to 88-86 on a basket by Elijah Lomas with 14 seconds left. However, Dick made 1-of-2 free throws with nine ticks left and a last second three was off the mark for the War Hawks.

Kidus Getenet added 13 points and six rebounds for Austin College, and Jackson Rennie finished with 12 for the 'Roos. Christian Luera came off the bench to score 12 points in the victory, and Josh Joe dished out eight assists for Austin College. Minor led all scorers with 23 points and added nine assists, and CJ LeBlanc added 16 points. Lomas and Elijah Garcia each scored 14, with Garcia pulling down nine rebounds. Matt Pena hit five threes to finish with 15 points for McMurry.
