'Roos Drop Last Second Heartbreaker

KERRVILLE, Texas - The Austin College men's basketball team led the way for most of Saturday's game against Schreiner University, but the Mountaineers score with one second remaining to hand the 'Roos a 72-71 defeat. The 'Roos are now 5-14 overall and 2-8 in SCAC competition.

The 'Roos got out to a hot start, scoring the first 10 points of the game and they would push the margin to 31-19 with 4:44 left in the opening half. Schreiner began to chip away, getting it down to 38-33 before Austin College scored the last four points of the half to head into the break leading 42-33. Schreiner came out strong to start the second half, surging ahead 49-48 for their first lead of the game with 12:57 left in the game.

The teams went back and forth over the next several minutes, with Schreiner grabbing a 59-54 lead with 8:27 to play before Austin College battled back to take a 64-63 lead on a basket by Tristan Dick. Austin College led 71-66 with just over three minutes remaining, but the Mountaineers scored four in a row to cut it to one, and with one second left Jalen Ned scored to give Schreiner the buzzer-beating victory.

Dick finished the game with 19 points and 14 rebounds, and also added five blocked shots while Jason Jones had 18 points and 11 boards. Jaylyn Cleamons nearly finished with a double-double of his own, scoring 14 points and pulling down nine rebounds, and Jake Patin chipped in 12 points in the loss. Bronson Evans led all scorers with 22 points for Schreiner.
