Second Half Surge Lifts 'Roos Past Gents

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College men's basketball team trailed by as many as 13 and found themselves down 42-32 at halftime, but a big run to open the second half pushed the 'Roos into the lead and they would end up topping Centenary 81-78 on Saturday afternoon in Hughey Gym. Austin College is now 5-9 overall and 2-3 in SCAC play.

Austin College scored the first four point of the game, but Centenary quickly seized the momentum and went on top 22-9 with 13:44 left in the opening half. Jackson Rennie knocked down a three to trim it to a 10 point game, and after the Gents pushed it to a 27-16 lead the 'Roos battled back to make it 27-22 after a dunk by Tristan Dick with 9:15 on the clock. Centenary got the lead back to double figures at 34-24, and they'd maintain that 10 point lead into the break. 

After a bucket by Jaylyn Cleamons to open the half, Centenary scored the next three to make it 45-34 but Austin College would put 13 unanswered points on the board, with Rennie scoring seven in a row during the run to knot things at 45 apiece. Cleamons scored inside to put the 'Roos ahead 47-45 with 15:41 to play, and the 'Roos would push the margin to 57-49 following a three point play from Kaleb Bennett with 12:16 showing. 

Centenary cut it to 67-63 with 5:49 to play, but the 'Roos got threes from Chanston Goodman and Rennie to make it 73-65, and the lead would grow to 77-65 on a pair of free throws from Dick with 2:15 left. Centenary would fight back and cut it to a one point game at 79-78 with 27 seconds remaining, but Rennie knocked down two free throws to seal the win for Austin College.

Rennie scored 21, hitting 5-of-13 threes in the game, and Dick finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, and seven steals. Cleamons had 15 points, 11 boards, and five assists, and Jason Jones had 12 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals. Braedon Board led all scorers with 23 points for Centenary, and AJ Hall added 19 for the Gents.
