'Roos Fall in Overtime Heartbreaker

SHERMAN, Texas –The Austin College men's basketball team led most of the way, but Schreiner came back to force overtime and would ultimately hand the 'Roos a 76-74 defeat on Friday night in Hughey Gym. The 'Roos are now 7-11 overall and 3-6 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Austin College scored the first four points of the game and quickly grabbed a 9-3 lead just over three minutes in, and after the Mountaineers cut it to an 11-7 game, the 'Roos responded with a 12-2 run. Devin Roland and Kam Hogan each knocked down a three to cap off the run, making it a 23-9 game with 10:20 left in the opening half.

The lead grew to 28-13 on a basket by Jaylyn Cleamons, but Schreiner rallied back with seven straight to cut it to an eight-point deficit. Roland responded with a basket and Derek Lockman nailed a three to put Austin College ahead 33-20, but the Mountaineers would score the last five points of the half to make it 33-25 at the break.

Schreiner quickly trimmed it to a 35-30 game, and after a bucket from Hogan gave Austin College a 41-33 lead the Mountaineers would score the next 12 points to go on top 45-41 with 14:56 left in regulation. The teams traded baskets over the next several minutes until Schreiner took a 58-55 lead on a three-point-play by Ellis Jones with 5:42 on the clock. Cleamons scored on a tip-in, and Lockman buried a triple to give the lead back to Austin College at 60-58.

Roland picked off a pass at halfcourt and raced in for a dunk, and a three-point-play by Hogan gave Austin College a 65-58 lead with 3:19 remaining. However, Schreiner would respond with seven unanswered to square things up once again. Lockman connected from 25 feet to put Austin College ahead 68-65 with just over a minute left, but after the Mountaineers got a free throw to cut it to a two-point game, Josh Bashford scored in the lane to even things up with 13 seconds left and force overtime.

Schreiner jumped out to a 75-70 lead three minutes into the overtime period, but a free throw from Kameron Hill and another trey from Lockman pulled Austin College to within one at 75-74 with 1:09 left. After Schreiner got 1-of-2 free throws with 12 seconds left, Hill's three-point attempt missed and Hogan was unable to get the follow to go.

Hogan finished with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals to lead the 'Roos, and Roland added 16 points. Lockman knocked down 4-of-7 from long distance on his way to 12 points, and Cleamons just missed out on a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Matthew Rindahl scored 24 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Schreiner, while Cameron Davis added 12 and Bashford chipped in 11 off the bench.

The 'Roos will be looking to bounce back on Tuesday, when they host the University of Dallas in another SCAC tilt with tip-time set for 8:00 p.m. in Hughey Gym.
