BELTON, Texas - The Austin College football team headed to Belton to take on No. 4-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, keeping things close through the first quarter before the Cru pulled away in the second period on their way to handing the 'Roos a 38-7 loss.
The 'Roos took an early 7-3 lead, as UMHB got on the board with a field goal before Austin College marched 89 yards on eight plays, culminating in a five-yard touchdown run by Tyler James with 5:47 left in the first. However, the Cru would answer by going 75 yards in eight plays to get a 22-yard touchdown pass from Kyle King to Marvin Young to make it 10-7, and that's how things would stand heading into the second.
UMHB scored 21 of their 38 points in the second quarter, with King finding KJ Miller for a nine-yard touchdown to make it 17-7 and Kenneth Miller rushing 32 yards for a score to make it 24-7. The Cru would take a 31-7 lead into halftime following a seven-yard touchdown run by Alphonso Thomas. Mary Hardin-Baylor added one more touchdown in the third quarter, as KJ Miller rushed 16 yards for a score, and the teams would go scoreless in the fourth to make it a 38-7 final.
Tiger Dietz led the 'Roos offensively with seven carries for 52 yards, adding a reception for seven more yards. Ben Meraz rushed 11 times for 37 yards, as Austin College totaled 121 yards on the ground and 145 yards of total offense. King went 14-of-20 for 150 yards and two touchdowns to lead UMHB, and Thomas rushed 18 times for 106 yards.
Defensively, Colton Gerken and Brady Dygert each had seven stops to lead the 'Roos, and Durand Hill made 13 tackles for the Cru.
