'Roo Football Drops Season Opener at Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. - The Austin College football team fell on the road at Hendrix College to open the 2022 campaign, as the Warriors topped the 'Roos by a final score of 20-0 on Saturday afternoon.

It was a defensive battle through the first three quarters with Hendrix managing to punch in the lone touchdown of the first 45 minutes with 4:07 left in the second quarter, making it a 7-0 game through both halftime and the third quarter. However, the Warriors got on the board again early in the fourth with a short run, and put the game away with 2:10 on another 1-yard touchdown plunge to make the score 20-0.

Austin College out-gained Hendrix on the ground with 114 rushing yards to 112 for the Warriors, but the 'Roos didn't manage any passing yards, with Tyler James going 0-for-3 on his only attempts in the game. Kennon Magers led Austin College offensively with 52 yards on 11 carries, and Tiger Dietz and Colin Mushinski each added 25 yards on the ground. 

Brady Dygert had a big game defensively, making nine tackles including 3.5 for loss with 1.5 sacks. Texas Gordon added nine tackles and a forced fumble, and Jeremiah Contreras recorded an interception in the loss. Hendrix was led by Jacob Wood, who completed 18-of-26 passes for 238 yards, while Jaxon Cobern rushed 16 times for 82 yards. Mitch Johnson had 10 tackles to pace the Warriors defensively.

Austin College returns home to open up newly renovated Apple Stadium next Saturday, playing host to Rhodes College at 1:00 p.m.
