The Austin College football team grabbed a 17-14 lead with five minutes remaining against Southwestern Assemblies of God, but the Lions would answer with a touchdown and add a last second safety to top the 'Roos 23-17 on Saturday night in Waxahachie. The 'Roos are now 2-2 overall this season.

The two teams combined for 10 turnovers in sloppy playing conditions and a driving thunderstorm, with play being suspended for more than an hour at halftime due to lightning strikes. SAGU led 14-7 as the teams went into the locker room for the extended break, after Lincoln Kenitzer found Bryant Dotson for an 18-yard touchdown with 6:16 on the clock in the first to put the Lions on top early.

Cooper Woodyard answered for Austin College, finding Tom Clancy for an 11-yard touchdown pass later in the quarter to square things up. However, Kenitzer would hit Jeremy Carr for a 15-yard touchdown to send SAGU into halftime up by a touchdown.

In the second half, Cesar Ruiz would hit a 40 yard field goal with 57 seconds left in the third quarter to trim the margin to a 14-10 game. The 'Roos would take the lead with just over five minutes to play, when Woodyard found Kyle Mucerino in the back of the endzone facing fourth and goal from the 5-yard line to make it 17-14.

The lead was shortlived, however, as SAGU quickly went down the field, culminating in Kenitzer finding paydirt from a yard away with just over three minutes left to play. Austin College would be unable to respond, as a fourth down conversion attempt came up just half a yard short on the ensuing drive for the 'Roos. Austin College would get one final chance with 11 seconds left, but Mucerino was unable to find any running room on a desperation punt return attempt, finally being dragged down in the endzone for a game-ending safety.

Woodyard completed 17-of-35 passes for 257 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions, and added 45 rushing yards in the loss. Brennan Ellis caught four passes for 147 yards to lead the 'Roos, and Charles Eneh made 12 tackles, including 2.5 for loss. Major Adams added 10 tackles, an interception, and also blocked a field goal attempt.

Kenitzer completed 21-of-30 passes for 228 yards with two touchdowns and three picks, and JP Lowery rushed for 70 yards on 17 carries for SAGU.
