SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team put together a late rally after falling in a 6-0 hole after the opening inning of play, but the 'Roos came up short in a 7-6 loss on Sunday afternoon at Baker Field. The 'Roos are now 2-10 overall and 2-7 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Dallas took advantage of Austin College errors and multiple walks and hit batters in the opening frame to take their big early lead, with Luke Gill driving in the first run with a base hit before the next three runners came home with a walk and two players being hit by pitches with the basees full, and another error led to the fifth run for the Crusaders. Dallas added one final run in the inning to grab their commanding lead, before Austin College managed to get a run back in the bottom of the second when Ashton Cason drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Crusaders went ahead 7-1 in the top of the third, with the 'Roos cutting the margin to 7-2 in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by RayShawn Riley, and that's how things would stand until the bottom of the ninth. Jayden Ayala-Hinojosa knocked home the first run of the inning, and two runs came across via an error from UD. Another error in the field from the Dallas defense allowed Desmond Squalls to come home to make it 7-6 but that's where the rally ended, as a double play wrapped up the inning and the game.
Blake Goodridge took the loss after giving up five runs, three earned, on two his with two walks without recording an out in the opening frame. Asher Thompson ended up pitching 9.0 innings in relief, surrendering one unearned run on six hits while throwing just 93 pitches. Tito Ramos got the victory for UD and Keller Shamburger earned the save for the Crusaders, while Tino Ramirez and Riley both had three hits for the 'Roos.
