'Roos Drop Two to Southwestern

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team dropped both halves of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference twinbill with Southwestern University on Friday night, falling 10-3 in game one and 4-1 in extra innings in game two.

Game one was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Southwestern's Maxwell Mims hit a two-run homer to put the Pirates on top. The lead wouldn't last long, however, as Tyler Ward doubled home a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to square things up. The Pirates put four runs on the board in the top of the sixth to go ahead 6-2, including getting a three-run home run from Owen Stevenson in the frame. Austin College got one run back when RayShawn Riley scored on a wild pitch in that same inning, but the Pirates added three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to put the game away.

Tyler Ramage took the loss for Austin College, giving up six runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. Riley went 2-for-5 to lead Austin College at the plate, as the 'Roos were limited to six hits in teh game. 

The second game of the evening was a pitchers' duel throughout, with Trystan Mallory and Stephen Rutherford taking a scoreless game into the sixth. That's when Austin College finally got to Rutherford on the scoreboard, with Ryan Padfield doubling to score Asher Thompson to make it a 1-0 game. Austin College maintained that narrow lead until the top of the eighth, when Josh Harris came home on a fielder's choice to even things up, and ultimately force extra innings.

Jake Tanner brought home what would prove to be the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th, and the Pirates added two more runs in the frame to go ahead 4-1. Austin College loaded teh bases in the bottom half of the inning, but were unable to bring any runs home. Brant Stuber absorbed the loss for the 'Roos, giving up three runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of work in relief. Scott Hosmer and Tino Ramirez each had a pair of hits to pace Austin College at the dish.
