'Roo Baseball Falls to Southwestern

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team found itself tied at 5-5 after five innings, but visiting Southwestern University plated five runs over the next two innings and the 'Roos were unable to rally in a 10-5 loss to the Pirates on Friday night in Apple Stadium. The 'Roos are now 6-16 overall and 1-6 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the defeat.

The Pirates got on the board with a run in the top of the first, with Austin College quickly answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Jake Webster ripped an RBI double to get the scoring started, and Scott Hosmer brought Webster home in the next at-bat. However, an error opened the door to a pair of Southwestern runs in the second as the Pirates took the lead back at 3-2.

The seesaw battle continued as Austin College plated two more to retake the lead at 4-3 after two, with Sergio de Paoli doubling home a pair of runs in the frame but the lead was short-lived. Southwestern got two more runs in the third to make it 5-4 in favor of the visitors, and that remained the score until Jake Trapani brought home a run in the bottom of the fifth to even things up.

Southwestern went back on top in the top of the sixth, pushing three runs across to make it an 8-5 game. Two more runs came home for the Pirates in the top of the seventh to make it 10-5,

Justin Lambright took the loss for Austin College, surrendering eight runs - six earned - on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work, and Webster went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the 'Roos at the plate. Scott Hosmer added a 3-for-4 performance, and Branson Vrazel and Jake Trapani each went 2-for-5.

The 'Roos and Pirates wrap up their weekend series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
