'Roo Baseball Picks Up First SCAC Victory

SHERMAN, Texas - After dropping the first two games of their three game SCAC series at the University of Dallas, the 'Roo baseball team got into the win column with a 9-4 victory over the Crusaders on Sunday afternoon. The 'Roos are now 5-12 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

The 'Roos dropped the first two games of the series on Saturday by scores of 15-5 and 8-3, but bounced back on Sunday behind a 3-for-5 performance at the plate by Logan Ballard and a strong outing on the mound from Garrett Gray. The 'Roos put three runs across in the top of the first to take an early lead, with Ballard, Jake Webster, and Brandon Hill each driving in a run.

The Crusaders got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but Walker Davis knocked in a run and Webster scored on a wild pitch in the third to make it 5-2. Dallas trimmed it to a 5-3 game in the fourth, but Davis tripled home another run in the top of the fifth. The Crusaders got that run back in the bottom half of the inning to make it 6-4, but Austin College put the game away in the sixth, with Branson Vrazel driving home two runs and Sergio De Paoli scoring on a double steal to make it 9-4 and that's how things would stay.

Gray gave up four runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work while striking out three, and Trystan Mallory and Kurtis Gustafson combined to throw three perfect innings to close things out. Zack Mahoney went 2-for-4, and De Paoli, Webster, and Mason Woodhouse each picked up a pair of hits in the victory.
