'Roos Roll Over Capital

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team got out to an early lead and never looked back against visiting Capital University on Wednesday evening, topping the Comets 18-8 in a non-conference tilt. The 'Roos are now 4-7 overall on the year, having won four of their last five games.

Logan Ballard put the 'Roos ahead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly, and Ballard would add another RBI on a single in the third to make it 2-0. Jake Webster drove home another run that same inning, and Sergio De Paoli knocked in another run in the fourth. Zack Mahoney belted his fourth home run of the year in the fourth as well, driving in two runs to make it a 6-0 game before Capital got on the board with four runs in the top of the fifth.

Austin College answered back with six runs in the bottom of the inning to push it to a 12-4 game, with Mahoney and Webster each driving in a pair of runs in the frame. Capital cut it to a 12-7 game heading into the bottom of the seventh, but Webster knocked in a run and Beau Beshires drove in two more to make it a 15-7 game after seven full innings. The Comets tacked on one more run in the eight, but Austin College pushed three runs across in the bottom of the inning to make it an 18-8 final.

Max Danielsen got the win in his first collegiate start, going 5.0 innings and allowing six runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Mahoney went 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored, and Branson Vrazel went 3-for-6 and scored four times in the win. Webster had a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with five RBI and a run scored to lead the 'Roos.
