Defensive Miscues Prove Costly in Loss to Eureka

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team committed 10 errors, resulting in 12 unearned runs, and the 'Roos fell 19-8 to visiting Eureka College on Monday evening at Baker Field. The 'Roos are now 3-7 overall on the year with the loss.

Austin College committed five of those errors in the first two innings, with Eureka taking advantage by plating a pair of runs in the first and four more in the second. The 'Roos got on the board with a run in the third when Ryan Padfield brought home a runner with a sacrifice fly, and another run scored when Alex Angerstein came home on a wild pitch in the fourth to make it 6-2. Eureka pushed it to 7-2 in the fifth before Austin college managed to get another run across on a double steal in the sixth, making it a 7-3 game.

The Red Devils took advantage of more defensive mishaps for Austin College in the seventh, however, pushing three runs across, and the lead grew to 17-3 in the eighth after a series of errors from Austin College opened the door to a seven run frame for Eureka. The 'Roos got five runs back in the bottom half of the inning, with Zach Marshall bringing home a run before Brandon Hill doubled home two runners, and Scott Hosmer and Angerstein each drove in a run apiece to cut it to a 17-8 game. However, Eureka tacked on two more runs in the ninth to make it a 19-8 final score.

Ethan Nixon took the loss for Austin College, giving up two runs in 0.1 innings of work to open the game. Angerstein, Beau Beshires, and Ashton Cason each had two hits for the 'Roos, with Angerstein adding a pair of stolen bases and scoring twice.

Austin College heads on the road tomorrow evening for a game at LeTourneau University.
