Pirates Take Two from 'Roo Baseball

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team fell in both halves of its doubleheader at Southwestern University on Saturday, dropping game one 12-2 in eight innings before falling 11-6 in game two. The 'Roos are now 5-19 overall and 1-16 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

In game one, the Pirates grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning and added a run in both the third and fourth innings to make it a 4-0 game heading into the fifth. That remained the score until the top of the sixth, when Austin College got on the board with an RBI single by Justin Alphonse, followed by a run-scoring single from Jake Webster to cut it to a 4-2 game. Southwestern got one run back in the seventh to make it a 5-2 game, an the Pirates erupted for seven runs in the eighth to make it a 12-2 final. 

Jake Trapani took the loss for Austin College, surrendering five runs - three earned - on five hits with four strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. Alphonse and Webster each had two hits to pace the 'Roos at the plate, while Webster also added a stolen base.

In game two, the Pirates once again jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two before the 'Roos pushed five runs across in the top of the third to take a 5-2 lead. Zack Mahoney got things started with an RBI single, and Logan Ballard brought home two more runs with a single of his own to put Austin College on top. Webster added an RBI single, and Jackson Kea singled home the team's fifth run to make it a 5-2 game.

However, the Pirates would even things up in the fourth with three runs to make it 5-5, and another run in the fifth put the Pirates up for good. Southwestern would tack on four runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-5 before Alphonse brought home a run with a double in the seventh to make it 10-6, but that's as close as the 'Roos would get. Southwestern added one final run in the botto of the seventh to make it an 11-6 final.

Ryan Culp suffered the loss for Austin College, giving up six runs - five earned - on six hits with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Webster and Mahoney each had two hits for Austin College to lead the 'Roos offensively.

The 'Roos and Pirates will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday with a single game at 1:00 p.m.
