TLU Takes Two from 'Roo Baseball

SEGUIN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team dropped both halves of its doubleheader at Texas Lutheran on Saturday, falling 4-2 in game one and 13-3 in game two. The 'Roos are now 4-9 overall and 0-6 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

In game one, the 'Roos and Bulldogs were scoreless until the bottom of the second, when TLU pushed a run across to make it 1-0, and the margin grew to 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Austin College got one run back in the top of the fourth when Cody Goggins drove in a run, but the Bulldogs scored twice more in the bottom half of the inning to get the margin to three runs at 4-1. Justin Alphonse scored on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth to narrow the gap to 4-2, but that's as close as things would get the rest of the way.

Ryan Culp took the loss for Austin College, surrendering four runs, only two earned, on seven hits with seven strikeouts in a complete game effort. Alphonse went 2-for-3 to pace the 'Roos at the plate.

The Bulldogs quickly grabbed a 2-0 lead after one in the second game of the day, and the margin grew to 4-0 through two innings. Zack Mahoney and Logan Ballard each knocked in a run in the third to cut it to a 4-2 game, but a two-run double for Texas Lutheran extended the lead to 6-2 heading into the fourth. Austin College would cut it to a 6-3 game in the fifth when Jake Webster crossed the plate, but that would be the last run of the game for Austin College as TLU scored twice in the bottom half of the inning and erupted for five runs in the sixth to make it a 13-3 final.

Garrett Gray suffered the loss for Austin College, giving up six runs - four earned - on two hits with six walks issued in 3.0 innings of action. Alphonse went 3-for-4 to lead Austin College and Webster and Beau Beshires each collected a pair of hits in the game.
