Strong Pitching Propels 'Roo Baseball Past Southwestern

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College baseball team surrendered just three hits and one unearned run, and Thomas Oberg went 4-for-4 with a pair of triples as the 'Roos snapped a 10-game skid with an 8-1 victory over Southwestern University on Friday night in Sherman. The 'Roos are now 10-15 overall and 1-9 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Southwestern got on the board first with an unearned run in the top of the first, as leadoff man Will Cates got aboard with a walk and took second on a passed ball. Cates would eventually scored in the inning to make it a 1-0 lead for the Pirates. However, the Southwestern lead would be short-lived.

Austin College plated four runs in the bottom of the second to grab a 4-1 lead, as Oberg tripled home a run and came home on a single by Austin Dudley, and Dudley would eventually score on an errant throw a few batters later. Scott Gelbart singled home one more run to complete the four run frame.

Oberg added another RBI triple in the fifth and scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-1, and a sacrifice fly from Gelbart made it 7-1 in the sixth. The 'Roos tacked on one more run in the eighth to make it an 8-1 final. Josh Lewis improved to 4-4 on the season with the victory, tossing 7.0 innings and surrendering one unearned run on just two hits with four strikeouts.

James Arguello went 3-for-4and Oscar Gonzalez went 2-for-4 for the 'Roos, while Cates collected two of Southwestern's three hits in the game. Jacob Kendra took the loss for the Pirates, surrendering six runs – four earned – on eight hits in 5.0 innings of work.

The 'Roos and Pirates will take the field again tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
