The Austin College baseball team completed its three-game sweep of the University of the Southwest on Saturday morning, topping the Mustangs 9-8 in Hobbs, New Mexico. The 'Roos are now 6-1 overall to start the season after taking all three games in the weekend series.
The 'Roos jumped on the board in the first inning and added a run in the third, before the Mustangs squared things up at two runs apiece in the fifth. The 'Roos exploded for seven runs in the sixth to go on top 9-2, and held on despite surrendering two runs in the seventh and four in the ninth.
Scott Gelbart went 3-for-4 and came up just shy of hitting for the cycle, as he hit a single, a triple, and blasted his first home run of the season. Gelbart knocked in two runs and scored twice. Jeremy Halford went 1-for-4 with two RBI in the win.
Brett Moody earned the victory to bring him to 2-0 on the year, surrendering four runs on 10 hits in 8.0 innings of work, while Chase Almaguer earned his second save of the weekend.
