Baseball Takes Two from University of the Southwest

The Austin College baseball team picked up a pair of victories on Friday night against the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico to improve to 5-1 on the year. The 'Roos won 7-5 in game one and 8-6 in game two.

In game one, the 'Roos fell behind 2-0 after the first inning before getting a pair of runs across in the second to square things up. Three runs came home in the fourth to make it a 5-2 Austin College lead, but Southwest came back to tie things up over the next two innings. However, the 'Roos plated two in the sixth and held on in the seventh for the 7-5 victory.

Austin Dudley went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Jeremy Halford went 2-for-3 with two RBI to pace the 'Roos offensively, while Mychael Parish earned the victory after tossing 6.0 innings and surrendering five runs, three earned, on eight hits. Chase Almaguer came on in relief to earn the save with a scoreless seventh.

In the second game, the 'Roos were limited to just six hits but took advantage of a pair of Southwest errors while also drawing six walks to plate eight runs, including six in the first two innings to go ahead 6-0 heading into the third. That remained the score until the fifth, when the Mustangs plated five runs to make it a 6-5 game but Austin College added two more in the seventh to push it to an 8-5 game. Southwest would get one run back but the 'Roos would hold on for the win with Brett Moody earning the save.

Josh Lewis got the win after surrendering five runs, only two earned, in 5.0 innings of work with four strikeouts. Dudley and Scott Gelbart each went 1-for-3 with two RBI to lead Austin College on offense.
