SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College baseball team dropped both halves of its doubleheader against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Centenary College on Saturday, falling 4-1 in game one before falling short in a comeback bid in a 7-5 game two final. The 'Roos are now 3-11 overall and 1-5 in SCAC play.

In game one, Centenary jumped on top early when Aaron Quintanilla singled home Michael Schimpf in the top of the first, and the Gents took advantage of a pair of Austin College errors to plate three more runs in the second to make it a 4-0 game. That remained the score until the bottom of the sixth, when Austin College was finally able to get on the board thanks to an RBI ground out by Will Schommer to make it a 4-1 game.

However, neither team would score over the final three innings, and the 'Roos would strand two runners in the bottom of the ninth in the defeat. Blaine Tew took the loss for Austin College, surrendering four runs – only one earned – on 10 hits in 7.0 innings of work. James Arguello went 3-for-4 to pace the 'Roos offensively.

Jake McFarland picked up the win for Centenary, giving up one run on six hits in 7.1 innings of work, and Quintanilla led the Gents with a 2-for-4 performance and two RBI.

Centenary again struck first in game two, this time with a Schimpf RBI double in the second, and the Gents would once again take advantage of Austin College errors to tack on three more runs over the course of the third and fourth innings to make it 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

That's when the Austin College bats started to come alive, with Arguello doubling home a run to get the 'Roos on the board, and Schommer followed up with an RBI single to cut the margin in half. Derek Hester added a single through the right side to plate the third run of the inning and make it 4-3 heading into the fifth.

That's how the score would stay until the top of the seventh, when Centenary would steal home twice in the inning. The first came on a double steal with Christian Sebastien and Chris Zapata, with Zapata coming home as the throw went down to second, and then after stealing third, Sebastien finished stealing his way around the bases by coming home to make it a 6-3 game.

Austin College would get both of those two runs back in the bottom of the inning though, as Arguello continued his big day with an RBI single and Will Schommer drew a bases loaded walk to cut it to a 6-5 game. However, Centenary would add one more run in the eighth and Austin College was unable to answer.

Arguello finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, and Chance Hatchel added a 2-for-4 performance with a double. Mychael Parish took the loss after giving up five runs – two earned – on eight hits in 6.0 innings of work.

Holden Novak picked up the win in relief for Centenary, and Taylor Henry earned his second save of the doubleheader. Schimpf finished 2-for-5 with an RBI to lead Centenary.
