Baseball Splits with TLU for First SCAC Win of Season

The Austin College baseball team fell 7-3 in game one of its doubleheader with Texas Lutheran on Saturday, but bounced back with a 9-1 victory in game two for the team's first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win of the year. The 'Roos are now 3-6 overall and 1-2 in SCAC play.

In game one, TLU jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning, and the lead grew to 5-0 after to more runs scored in the third and another came home in the fourth. The 'Roos got two runs back in the top of the fifth when James Arguello drove in a run and Jeremy Halford scored on a passed ball, but the Bulldogs added two more runs of their own to make it 7-2 heading into the sixth. Austin College tacked on another run in the seventh but would not be able to cut into the deficit any more.

Arguello finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and Will Schommer went 2-for-4. Mychael Parish took the loss, surrendering seven runs, five earned, on 12 hits in 7.0 innings of work.

The 'Roos grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two, with Arguello scoring to put Austin College ahead. TLU got that run back in the second to tie things up heading into the third, when the 'Roos erupted for four runs in the inning to take a 5-1 lead. Gus Daniel, Chance Hatchel, and Halford all had an RBI in the inning.

Josh Coughennower singled home two more runs in the fifth to make it 7-1, and Austin Dudley and Schommer both scored on throwing errors in the seventh to make it a 9-1 game. Bretty Moody would go the distance on the mound, shutting the door on TLU over the final three innings.

Moody finished the game surrendering just one run on seven hits, striking out four batters in a complete game victory. Hatchel finished 3-for-5 and Schommer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Dudley finished the game 2-for-2 with a double.
