Baseball Edged Twice in Doubleheader against Southwestern

The Austin College baseball team fell in both halves of its doubleheader against visiting Southwestern University on Saturday, as the Pirates edged the 'Roos 4-2 in game one and 4-1 in game two. The 'Roos fall to 4-24 overall this season and 2-13 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the two losses.

After two and a half scoreless innings to open game one, the 'Roos struck first in the bottom of the third when Marcos Molina singled, stole second, and then came home on an RBI base hit by Gus Daniel to make it 1-0. That remained the score until the fifth, when the Pirates would take advantage of two Austin College errors to plate four runs and make it a 4-1 game.

That would be the only scoring Southwestern got all game, but the 'Roos were unable to counter apart from putting one run across in the bottom of the seventh when Molina drove in James Arguello to cut it to a 4-2 game. However, the tying run would stay stranded on second as the Pirates held off the rally.

Josh Lewis took a no-hitter into the fifth but still took the loss for Austin College, tossing a complete game while allowing four runs, just two earned, on only three hits with four strikeouts. Molina finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run, and two stolen bases to lead the 'Roos.

The 'Roos and Pirates again started game two with a pitcher's duel, with neither team managing to cross the plate until the sixth inning when Southwestern plated a pair in the top half of the inning and Austin College responded with an RBI single by Daniel to make it 2-1. Clayton Sparks delivered a two run single for Southwestern to make it 4-1 in the top of the seventh, and Austin College was unable to get on the board the rest of the way to make it a 4-1 final.

Brett Moody took the loss for Austin College, surrendering two runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings of work. Six different 'Roos had one hit apiece, with Daniel finishing 1-for-4 with an RBI and Hunter Wilson going 1-for-4 with a run scored in the loss.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
