Blaine Tew took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and allowed just one run on three hits to help the Austin College baseball team win 5-1 in the second half of a twin bill on Saturday as the 'Roos split their doubleheader with Schreiner. The 'Roos fell 4-2 in game one, bringing their record to 1-2 to open the season.

In game one, the 'Roos fell in a 3-0 hole in the top of the first when Chase Valdez launched a three run homer, but Austin College was able to get one run back when Marcos Molina led off the bottom half of the inning with a solo shot to make it 3-1. The Mountaineers added a run in the third, but Todd Takabuki brought home Dylan Day in the bottom of the third to cut it to a 4-2 game.

However, that would be the end of the scoring in game one as neither team was able to add any runs over the final four innings. Austin College was limited to five hits, with Jared Jenkins going 2-for-3 to lead the way at the plate. Josh Lewis went the distance on the mount, giving up four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts to take the loss.

In game two the 'Roos jumped on the board with three runs in the bottom of the second thanks to a two run double by Will Schommer, who would come home on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Wilson later in the inning. Wilson and Molina each added an RBI in the fourth to make it a 5-0 lead and that's all the cushion Tew would need on the mound.

Tew tossed 5.2 innings of no-hit ball, and finished the game throwing 8.1 innings and striking out six batters. The 'Roos were again held to five hits, with Schommer going 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI, while Wilson went 1-for-4 with two RBI to lead Austin College offensively.

Austin College will be looking for another win when they host East Texas Baptist on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. at Baker Field.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
