'Roos Give up Lead Late in Season Opening Loss

The Austin College baseball team held a 2-0 heading into the eighth inning, but a six run frame for visiting Schreiner University led to a 6-2 loss on Friday night in the season opener for the 'Roos. Austin College will get a chance to rebound tomorrow when they host the Mountaineers for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.

The 'Roos struck early as Dylan Day reached on an error and then came home on a double by Todd Takabuki in the top of the first, and another run would cross the plate in the third on a Takabuki single that scored Marcos Molina to make it 2-0. The early hits by Takabuki were two of just four the 'Roos managed all game, but Austin College was able to maintain their slim lead heading into the late innings.

In the top of the eighth, the Mountaineers loaded the bases and after a run scoring single, an outfield error opened the door for a big inning for Schreiner as they scored all six of their runs in the frame to grab the lead. Austin College was unable to mount a comeback, falling by the 6-2 final.

Takabuki finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and CJ Adame went 2-for-3 with the team's only two other hits. Marshall Korn pitched six scoreless innings in getting the no decision, and Brett Moody took the loss after surrendering six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 2.0 innings of work.

Ryan Pisseri went 3-for-5 and Macro Carreon had an RBI double to lead the Mountaineers while Colton Mendenhall earned the victory after tossing 3.0 perfect innings of relief.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
