This year, Austin College will also honor Mike Sorrells as the 2017 recipient of the Coach Joe Spencer Award. Sorrells graduated from Austin College in 1965, and spent 33 years as the swimming coach at Highland Park High School, his own alma mater. Sorrells retired from that position in 2002, and is a member of the Texas Swimming & Diving Hall of Fame. Over the course of his career, Sorrells coached more than 40 individual and relay state champions, and sent numerous swimmers to the Summer Olympics.
The Austin College Athletics Hall of Honor inductees and Coach Joe Spencer Award honorees will be recognized at the annual Legends Weekend, to be held August 4-6, 2017. Members of the 2016 Hall of Honor class will also be recognized at the event, after severe weather and power outages caused last year's Legends Gala event to be canceled.
