Ladies Fall At Austin College On Saturday

Sherman, Texas – The Centenary women's basketball team dropped a 75-39 decision on Saturday afternoon to the Austin College 'Roos in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Hughey Gym.

The Ladies (3-12, 1-6 SCAC) lost for the sixth-straight time while the 'Roos improved to 4-9 overall and 3-2 in SCAC play.

Austin College shot 43.5 % (27-62) overall on the day and had three players reach double figures. The 'Roos, who had 15 players see action and had 11 players score, held the Ladies to just 21 % shooting (13-62) overall. Both teams struggled at the three-point line and at the free throw line. The 'Roos made just 8-22 (36.4 %) attempts from beyond the arc while the Ladies hit just 2-19 attempts. The 'Roos went 13-22 from the free throw line for 59 % and Centenary finished 11-22.

Junior G Destini Powell (Minden, La.) was the Ladies' leading scorer with 14 points and junior F Jazzmyn Jones (Normangee, Texas) joined her in double figures, scoring 10. Powell has reached double figures nine times this season and has done so in eight of the last 10 games and scored 14 for the second game in a row. Powell added nine rebounds as she just missed a double-double and had two steals and an assist in 34 minutes. Jones came off the bench and played 22 minutes, grabbing four rebounds and was 3-10 overall from the floor. Jones has now reached double figures nine times this season.

Sophomore guard Addy Tremie (Sulphur, La.) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and scored seven points in 36 minutes. She was 3-13 overall and made one three. Junior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) grabbed seven rebounds and scored four points in 20 minutes. Freshman G Mary Leday (Opelousas, La.) scored two points in 17 minutes with an assist and fellow freshman G Alana Jones (Shreveport) came off the bench to score two points in 15 minutes with two rebounds and a pair of steals.

Senior G Jennae Mayberry (Clovis, Calif.) and freshman G Dymon Drumgo (Alexandria, La.) did not score but Mayberry ad five rebounds, blocked two shots, had two assists and one steal in 28 minutes. Drumgo played 20 minutes and grabbed two rebounds with a steal. Junior G Blair Abshire (New Iberia, La.) played eight minutes and grabbed three rebounds and recorded one assist.

Austin led 17-8 after one quarter and outscored the Ladies 24-15 in the second quarter to take a 41-23 halftime lead. The 'Roos edged the Ladies 12-11 in the third quarter and then closed with a commanding 22-5 advantage in the final period. The 'Roos finished with a slight (47-46) edge in rebounding and forced 22 Centenary turnovers while committing 15 miscues themselves.

The Ladies return home for three-straight home games to finish off the month including a rematch with Austin College on Jan. 25. Centenary first plays Texas Lutheran on Monday, Jan. 24 and finishes the homestand versus Schreiner on Jan. 30.
