Ladies Rally Late But Fall To Austin College At Home On Tuesday

Shreveport – The Centenary women's basketball team's rally came up short on Tuesday night as the Ladies fell to the Austin College 'Roos 67-58 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at the Gold Dome.

The Ladies (3-14, 1-8 SCAC) lost to the 'Roos 75-39 just three days ago on the road but Tuesday night was a different story. The 'Roos improved to 5-9 overall and 4-2 in conference play and have won three games in a row.

Centenary fell 63-49 to the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs on Monday night at home as the Ladies battled back from a 10-point halftime deficit to draw within four points late in the third quarter and showed the same grit and determination against the 'Roos Tuesday. The Ladies have now lost eight games in a row but held an opponent to under 70 points for the 11th time this season. The Maroon and White have also held nine opponents to 65 points or less.

Austin College led 20-10 after one quarter and 34-22 at the half but a 17-point lead midway through the final period was reduced to just four (62-58) with 32 seconds remaining on a three pointer by sophomore guard Addy Tremie (Sulphur, La.) but the 'Roos outscored the Ladies 5-0 the rest of the way to secure the victory. Junior F Jazzmyn Jones (Normangee, Texas) led the Ladies with 15 points as she recorded her 11th double-figure scoring effort of the season. Jones grabbed eight rebounds, had two blocked shots, a steal, and was a perfect 3-3 from the free throw line. She made 6-12 of her shots overall in 26 minutes of action.

Junior G Destini Powell (Minden, La.) posted a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds in 29 minutes. She was also 3-3 from the free throw line and had two steals with 10 of her rebounds on the defensive end. Powell, like Jones, has also reached double figures 11 times this season and has done so in 10 of the last 12 games.

Tremie finished with eight points and six rebounds on 3-11 shooting in 37 minutes. She hit a pair of treys and recorded an assist and a steal. Senior G Jennae Mayberry (Clovis, Calif.) scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds in 38 minutes. Mayberry recorded an assist and a steal and went 2-2 from the free throw line, went 2-7 overall and hit one three pointer.

Freshman G Mary Leday (Opelousas, La.) scored five points in 18 minutes, shot 2-3 overall and hit one three-point basket and grabbed one rebound. Junior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) scored four points and had three rebounds in 15 minutes. Bagwell had a steal and went 2-3 from the free throw line.

Freshman G Dymon Drumgo (Alexandria, La.) came off the bench and scored four points in 10 minutes with three rebounds. Freshman G Alana Jones (Shreveport) and junior G Blair Abshire (New Iberia, La.) each scored two points. Jones grabbed four rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists. She added a steal and went 2-4 from the free throw line in 25 minutes. Drumgo added three rebounds in 10 minutes.

Centenary shot 30.8 % (20-65) for the game from the floor and 4-18 (22.2 %) from beyond the arc. The Ladies, though, were outstanding from the free throw line, making 14-17 (82.4 %) which was their second-best effort of the season.

The 'Roos shot 36.4 % (20-55) for the game overall, 8-22 (36.4 %) from three-point range, and 19-26 (73.1 %) from the free throw line. The Ladies finished with a 49-38 edge in rebounding, grabbing 33 on the defensive end and 16 offensive rebounds. Centenary had nine assists, seven steals, and two blocked shots and Austin College recorded 11 assists, eight steals, and also had two blocks. The Ladies turned the ball over 19 times while the 'Roos gave it away 16 times. Three Austin College players reached double figures led by a game-high 22 points from Natalie McCoy. Katy Pool scored 13 and Lauren Traylor added 10.

The Ladies will remain at home to face the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Sunday at 2 p.m.
