Career Highs and Dominance Show as Volleyball Sweeps SCAC Filled Day

Volleyball faced SCAC opponents Centenary and Austin College this past Friday on the road. St. Thomas showcased incredible play throughout the day, picking up wins in both matches and jumping to 5th place in the SCAC standings.

Centenary (3-0)

St. Thomas finishes their season series with Centenary sweeping them both times. In set one, the Celts would not let the Ladies do anything to compete. They forced them into a 7-1 hole and never looked back as they won the opener 25-7. In set two, Centenary would still be playing from behind as St. Thomas would go on an early 5-1 run. After the two teams would trade points through the middle of the set, the Celts ultimately were victorious with a 10-4 run to win 25-16. Finally, the third set would see St. Thomas go up 10-3 early, and the lead was large enough to give the Celts a cushion as they won 25-20 and the match 3-0.

Austin College (3-1)

In a rematch to avenge a 3-1 loss, the Celts did nothing but impress. Set one would see both teams go point for point with each other as nine ties dictated the flow of the set. It was ultimately Austin College who came out on top as a timely 3-0 run near the end of the set gave them the victory 25-23. In set two, UST responded to AC's win by going on an early 6-3 run. Yet it wasnt enough to put away the roos as they would tie the set at one point 15 apiece, but the Celts would go on 5-0 run to pull away with a large enough margin and win 25-19. With the score even, St. Thomas came out firing in the 3rd set. The Celt defense would not let the Roos get past ten points, while the offense would put up 25 in the blink of an eye to win 25-9. Then in the fourth and final set, with both teams trying to hang on, St Thomas showed resilience late to win the set 25-23 and match 3-1.

Offensively, Trinity Atkins led the way with an outstanding 22 kills. She posted her career-high 17 in the match with Austin College. Emerson Sykes also dished out 43 assists. Defensively, Kara Spice posted 37 Digs, and Paige Havel had ten total blocks.

With these two victories, Volleyball improves to 5-6 in the SCAC. and leaps Austin College to fifth overall. They look to get to .500 tomorrow against Dallas!
