GEORGETOWN, Texas — A fourth-quarter collapse cost the Southwestern women's basketball team in a 51-46 loss to the Austin College Kangaroos to close the regular season.

Jada Hollie scored a layup to give Southwestern a 37-28 lead with 7:20 remaining. After not scoring more than nine points in either the first or second quarter, Austin College was able to close that nine-point deficit in a little over two minutes, reeling off an 11-0 run to take a 38-37 lead on a Natalie McCoy steal and layup with 5:17 remaining.

The Southwestern scoring drought continued beyond that, going a total of four-and-a-half scoreless minutes before an Ellie Ward jump shot ended it to pull Southwestern within five at 43-39. Reece Sandercock had an opportunity to bring Southwestern within two but missed 1-of-2 free throws, and McCoy answered with a 3-pointer to keep the Pirates at bay.

McCoy and Sarah Gwin combined for 17 points in the fourth quarter as part of a 26-16 Austin College run to secure the victory. McCoy scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter. Gwin scored nine of her 11.

Senior Taylor Carney led Southwestern with 16 points and six rebounds, shooting 6-for-15 from the field, including 2-for-5 from behind the 3-point line. Ellie Ward added 14 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists. Sandercock continued to anchor a defense that held Austing College to 27.6 percent shooting, blocking six shots and grabbing eight rebounds.

Southwestern finishes the regular season with a 10-14 record, including 6-10 in conference play. The Pirates will be the sixth seed in the SCAC Tournament and will play Friday, Feb. 25, at 7:00 p.m.
