Baseball Edged Out in Extra Innings

The Crimson Wave baseball team dropped a conference doubleheader tonight to the University of St. Francis on the road in their CCAC season opener. The Crimson Wave found their stride in the game two before being edged out in extra innings.

CCSJ fell behind early in the game one trailing 5-0 after three innings of play. The men found themselves farther behind in the fourth inning after giving up three runs.

Antonio Reyes (JR/Lake Elsinore, Calif.) kicked off a sixth inning comeback with a double to right center. A Nick Verta double to left field would put score Reyes and put CCSJ on the board. USF would hit Alan Sanchez (JR/Oak Lawn, Ill.), before giving up a three homer to Enrique Rivero (SO/Miami, Fla.) and four total runs in the inning. This would be all the Wave could tally before giving the game to the Fighting Saints 9-4.

Reyes would end game one going 2-3 while Rivero would go 1-3 with three RBI's. Kenneth Conde (SR/Caguas, Puerto Rico) would post the loss for CCSJ.

In game two the Crimson Wave bats would come alive as they took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a Reyes single to right field that would bring in Alex Verta (SO/Chicago, Ill.). CCSJ would extend their lead to four with a three run third inning that started on a Rivero Single. With a Diego Quinones (JR/Aguada, Puerto Rico) single and two USF errors CCSJ would load the bases. A Verta single to left field would score two before Noah Miller (FR/Chicago, Ill.) reached first on a fielder's choice earning an RBI.

The men would let the Fighting Saints back in the game giving up four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Both teams would fight for the win over the next seven innings of play before USF would score the winning run in bottom of the tenth inning, leaving CCSJ defeated 5-4.

Quinones and Rivero were both 3-5 at the plate while Sanchez took the loss in the 10th.

The Crimson Wave now 6-13 and 0-2 in CCAC play will travel to Bourbonnais, IL to take on Olivet Nazarene University on Friday in 3:30 pm start.
