Austin College Rallies Late, Defeats Southwestern

Austin College Rallies Late, Defeats Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern Pirates could not maintain their lead and lost 5-2 to Austin College.

The Pirates showed a strong defensive effort, as they held the Roos scoreless through much of the game. Southwestern's starting pitcher Matt Litz threw seven shutout innings before Austin College came alive in the 8th

Southwestern was the first to score in the game in the bottom of the 5th.  Colton Shea led off with a walk and later stole second base.  Charlie Garrett followed with a double down the left field line, advancing Shea to third.  Shea scored on a Dickson Wharton ground out and put the Pirates up 1-0.

Just when it seemed the defensive effort was going to hold up, the lead got away from the Pirates.  In the 8th inning, Austin College scored 3 runs on 5 hits to give them the 3-1 advantage.

SU's Ross Meyer added another run in the bottom of the 8th inning, to cut it to a 3-2 game. However, the Roos scored 2 more runs in the 9th and put the Pirates down in order to secure the 5-2 win.

Mychael Parrish earned the win and improved to 1-3. He pitched 7 innings, allowed 5 hits, 1 run, and a walk. Matt Litz took the loss, but pitched well throughout most of the game.  Southwestern's Jeff Glasgow and Dickson Wharton both went 1-4 on the afternoon and each drove in a run.  Austin College improves to 6-16 on the season and Southwestern drops to 2-19.

The Pirates will be home again this Tuesday, March 12th, when they take on Howard Payne University at 6:00PM.
