Softball Takes First Two Games at Austin College

Softball continued SCAC play against Austin College, taking games one and two by a combined score of 17-6.

Game One UST 6 AC 4

St. Thomas found themselves in an early hole Saturday afternoon at Austin College. The Kangaroos scored four runs in the second inning to go up 4-0. The 'Roos kept the Celt bats quiet until the third inning when Jaelyn Simmons struck homered to ignite St. Thomas. In the top of the fourth, Shae Montemayor and Paige Odenbach reached base setting the table for Freshman Delayne Moreno, who singled to score Montemayor. Jaelyn Simmons continued her offensive tear with a single to score Odenbach and Moreno, tying the game at 4. Later in the sixth, Austin College found themselves in a bases-loaded jam. Brenna Ruether drew a walk, scoring Delayne Moreno and finally giving the Celts the lead 5-4. Lindsey Gonzalez added an insurance run, singling in Odenbach to end the scoring and securing the 6-4 St. Thomas victory.

After struggling early, Lindsey Longuet steadied herself and held the AC bats in check, allowing UST to chip away at the early deficit and earn the hard-fought 6-4 victory. Longuet improved to 9-3 on the season.

Game Two UST 11 AC 2 (6 Innings)

Game two of the doubleheader was all St. Thomas. Opening up the scoring for the Celts was Paige Odenbach, who drove in Taylor Le with a single in the second inning. Sydnye Cromwell scored when Kayleigh Deakle singled to give the Celts a 2-0 lead. Austin College responded with two runs of their own before St. Thomas pulled away with a six run fifth inning. Sparked by an early walk to Jaelyn Simmons, Addison Lehew singled up the middle to drive in Simmons. Delayne Moreno reached base off a throwing error by the 'Roos second baseman; however, this would not be the end of the play, as Carla Aleman and Sydneye Cromwell also scored to give St. Thomas the 8-2 advantage. Addison Lehew finished the offensive assault for the Celts' when she blasted a three-run home run providing an 11-2 lead and eventual final score when UST recorded the final out in the bottom of the inning.

Mallorie Munson got it done at the mound for the Celts. After playing left field in game one, Munson showcased her skills as a pitcher as she recorded five strikeouts and ran her record to 3-2 with the six inning complete game over Austin College.

The final game of the series is set for tomorrow in Sherman; the first pitch is at noon as the Celts look to improve to 7-1 in the SCAC and hold second place overall.
