GEORGETOWN, Texas - In a long and hard-fought series, the Southwestern Pirates swept their three-game series against the Austin College Roos, winning the third game 8-0 this Sunday afternoon on Taylor Sanders Field.

 

In the first inning, shortstop  Sam Martinez played a strong infield defense grounding out the first two outs and pitcher Kinly McCaffrey struck out the third batter. Going into the top of the first, Sydney Scott singled to reach first base and stole two bases to be on third base as Tori Montemayor went to bat. With Scott on third base, Montemayor batted the ball to the Roo's shortstop, but with an error from the shortstop, Montemayor reached first base and Scott made it to home, plate scoring the first run for the Pirates.

 

In the second inning, both the Pirates and Roos went scoreless and this continued in the third inning as well. In the bottom of the fourth, after McCaffrey took the mound and kept the Roos scoreless, Andrea Hern hit the ball far out to center field allowing Kathryn Dull to score and Hern to gain one RBI. Maddie Mefford scored the third run of the game for the Pirates, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead over the Roos in the bottom of the fourth.

 

The Pirates and Roos were again scoreless in the fifth, but the Pirates found their momentum in the bottom sixth when Mefford once again scored a run with the bases loaded.  Izzy Richey advanced to third base and Hern scored the fifth run after Scott grounded out to second base.

 

Montemayor came to bat and doubled to left center, allowing Richey to score and Montemayor to earn one RBI. Once again the bases were loaded with Montemayor at third, Copher at second and Nunez at first. Dull was hit by a pitch  and Montemayor jogged in a seventh run for the Pirates. Copher scored the final run in the bottom of the sixth to end the game 8-0 with another Pirate win and a complete sweep in the Pirates second Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) series.

 

The Southwestern University softball team improves 12-5 and 5-1 in conference play. The Pirates will get ready to travel down to Austin, Texas, to play Concordia University Texas on Tuesday, March 10 at 5 and 7 p.m. before traveling to Arizona to compete in the Tucson Invitational Games next week.
