Women's Water Polo Goes 2-2 to Open Conference Play

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Austin College women's water polo team stepped into CWPA play this weekend in Minnesota, with the 'Roos going 2-2 with a pair of victories over Washington & Jefferson and Carthage, while falling to Augustana and Macalester.

Austin College started the weekend with its highest offensive output, holding off W&J by a score of 15-14 on Friday evening. Alyssa Ross had a massive game for the 'Roos, scoring eight goals to lead the way while also adding four steals and four ejections drawn. Ashley Chand tallied twice and added three assists, and Emily Engberson had five blocks while tending the cage. Xytali Silkey, Bianca Gallegos, Joslyn Dimitri, McKenna Malone, and Mikhaela Torres each found the back of the net once.

The 'Roos dropped their first game on Saturday against Augustana, falling 14-8 to last year's CWPA champions. Cory McGrath led Austin College offensively with three tallies, while Dimitri had a pair. Gallegos, Ross, and Malone each found the back of the goal once in the game. 

Austin College bounced back later in the afternoon against Carthage, coming away with a 10-7 victory behind two goals apiece from McGrath, Gallegos, Ross, and Chand, with Torres and Kylee Noble also scoring once each. Noble added a team-best eight steals, and McGrath added five in the win. Noble and Gallegos also each had a pair of assists, and Chand chipped in five steals for the 'Roos.

In the team's final game of the weekend, Austin College came up just short against Macalester, falling 12-11 to finish the conference trip. McGrath had her biggest offensive game of the weekend in the loss, tallying four times while adding a steal and an assist. Ross and Noble each put the ball in the cage twice each, with Ross adding two steals and two assists. Gallegos, Dimitri, and Chand each scored once, and Ashley Easley had five blocks in goal for Austin College.
