Showdown With #33 Lewis & Clark Goes 6-3 To Pioneers

PORTLAND, Ore. - The match between #33 Lewis & Clark and West #15 Austin College had several dramatic tiebreakers to huge nationally-ranked upsets, but fell in the direction of the Pioneers 6-3.

  Austin College started hot at line 1 and line 2 doubles, but only line 2 would secure an 8-6 victory with Melody Duong and Grace Ortiz taking the net on nearly every point.

  Line 3 doubles started down 1-6, but won 6 straight games to take a 7-6 lead.  The Pioneers would force a tiebreaker for the ages, as Austin College had several match points, but fell 9-8 (12-10), starting singles competition down 2-1.

  All of the first four singles matches were closely contested as AC took three of the four first sets.  Duong and Anna Sergiovanni would put AC up 3-2 at lines 1 and 3 with Duong upsetting the 50th-ranked singles player in the nation.

  Carvajalino's opponent would force a third set while Grace Ortiz battled to a 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) defeat at Line 4.  Carvajalino would drop the third 6-1, and the Kangaroos' fourth match in three days would catch up to them, falling 6-1, 6-0 at line 5, and 6-0, 6-0 at line 6.

  Austin College returns home from Portland for a few days before traveling to San Antonio on Thursday, 3/22 to face #40 Cal Tech at 4:00PM.
