Austin College Comes Up Short Against Centenary

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team dropped a 62-58 decision against visiting Centenary College on Saturday, as the Ladies pulled away late to hand the 'Roos the defeat in Hughey Gym.

Sarah Putnicki scored a game-high 20 points and added five blocked shots and Naomi Anamekwe pulled down 11 rebounds with four blocks of her own, while Brooklyn Matthews came off the bench to chip in 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists for Austin College

The Ladies jumped out to a 17-6 lead in the opening quarter before Austin College scored six straight to end the period and make it a 17-12 game after one, and the run continued into the second frame as the 'Roos added nine more points in a row to make it a 15-0 run, taking a 21-17 lead with 6:28 left in the first half. However, Centenary responded with a 7-0 run to go back on top 24-21, and the Ladies would take a 29-27 advantage into the break.

Centenary held a 43-40 lead after three quarters, and after Putnicki cut it to a 46-44 game with 7:36 to play the Ladies went on a 10-2 run to go ahead 56-46 and the 'Roos were unable to get the margin under four points the rest of the way. Austin College shot 38% from the field compared to just 33.3% for Centenary, the Ladies held a 16-7 edge in points off of turnovers and outscored the 'Roos 23-18 from the free throw line, attempting 38 foul shots compared to 20 attempts for the 'Roos.

Putnicki made 7-of-12 shots and 6-of-7 from the stripe to get her 20 points, and Matthews was perfect on her shot attempts in the game, going 3-for-3 from the floor and knocking down all four of her foul shots. Sarah Gwin chipped in eight points, nine rebounds, and six assists for the 'Roos. Kyra Stokes was the lone Centenary player to notch double digits in the scoring column, finishing with 12 points and six rebounds.
