No. 4 Whitman Too Much for 'Roos

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team dropped an 89-51 game against No. 4-ranked Whitman College on Saturday, as the Blues took a 25-9 lead after the opening quarter and the 'Roos were unable to recover. Austin College is now 1-3 overall on the year.

The 'Roos, playing their second top 15 team in the first four games of the year, shot just 28.8% from the field and 21.7% from beyond the arc and were out-rebounded by a margin of 53-31 as Whitman made 49.3% of their shots and had assists on 26 of their 34 made baskets in the game. The Blues were dominant in the paint, scoring 52 points down low compared to 18 for the 'Roos, and the Whitman bench outscored Austin College 29-10. 

Whitman took a 14-2 lead in the early going before Austin College battled back to make it 16-9 on a Sarah Putnicki basket, but the Blues scored nine straight to end the first quarter and build a 16 point lead. The margin grew to 29-11 early in the second, and after Lauren Traylor knocked down a triple to make it 34-18 with 5:24 left before halftime, Whitman closed the half on an 11-1 run to go into the locker room leading 45-19, and the Blues would outscore Austin College 44-32 after the break to put the game away.

Natalie McCoy made 5-of-9 shots, including 2-of-4 from deep, on her way to a team-high 12 points and Katy Pool chipped in 10 points and six rebounds in the loss. Traylor finished with nine points, and Sarah Gwin added eight for the 'Roos. Kaylie McCracken led all scorers with 23 points for Whitman.
