'Roo Women Set for SCAC Tournament Friday

'Roo Women Set for SCAC Tournament Friday

The Austin College women's basketball team enters the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament as the No. 3-seed, and will take on the No. 6-seeded University of Dallas Crusaders on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Georgetown.

This will mark the third time Austin College and Dallas have squared off this season, with the 'Roos taking each of the first two meetings. The 'Roos won 64-59 in Sherman on January 13, and followed that up with a 63-51 win in Irving on February 3.

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

Austin College finished the regular season with a record of 18-7 for the second straight year, while also boasting a 10-4 mark in SCAC play. Dallas, meanwhile, was 11-14 on the year and 3-11 in conference play.

Game Notes

  • When the 'Roos topped Dallas on January 13, it was thanks in large part to a huge fourth quarter effort from Caitlyn Collins. The sophomore guard scored 11 of her career-high 21 points in the final quarter, as Austin College held off a scrappy effort by the Crusaders.
  • On February 3, the 'Roos trailed 26-25 at halftime before grabbing a narrow lead by the end of the third quarter. Austin College outscored Dallas 27-17 in the final 10 minutes to secure the win.
  • In two games against the Crusaders this season, Kendall Heitmeier has scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in each meeting. Heitmeier is also averaging 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists in the two matchups this season.

Key Matchup: Bryce Frank vs Michelle DeCoud

Friday's game features a low-post matchup between the only two players in the SCAC to average a double-double this season in Austin College's Bryce Frank and UD's Michelle DeCoud. Frank finished the season ranked fifth in the SCAC in scoring at 14.4 points-per-game, and led the conference with 10.6 rebounds-per-game. DeCoud, meanwhile, was third in scoring at 15.4 points-per-game and second in rebounding, grabbing 10.2 boards-per-game.

DeCoud was also third in the SCAC in field goal percentage, hitting 51.0% from the floor, while Frank finished the regular season fifth in the conference at a clip of 48.4% from the field.

Other Players to Watch

Along with Frank and DeCoud, Friday's quarterfinal matchup will also feature two of the top three assist getters in the SCAC. Dallas point guard Holly Tonry leads the SCAC with 5.7 assists-per-game, while Austin College's Ann Savage averages 3.3, ranking her third in the league.

Savage also ranks second in the SCAC in three point percentage, hitting 41.3% from deep (behind only teammate Olivia Cicci, who connects on 42.4% from downtown), while UD's Seana Stoia ranks sixth in the SCAC from long distance at 37.1% from deep. Stoia also averages 13.1 points and 7.3 rebounds-per-game.

Heitmeier, meanwhile, ranks 12th in the conference in three point percentage and averages 12.9 points and 7.2 rebounds-per-game. Earlier this month, she became just the sixth Austin College player in the past 20 seasons to surpass 1,000 career points.

What's Next

The winner of Friday's quarterfinal matchup will move on to face No. 2-seed Texas Lutheran, which finished the year 20-5 overall and went a combined 4-0 against Austin College and Dallas. The Bulldogs beat Dallas by scores of 72-66 and 68-49, while topping the 'Roos by scores of 75-68 (in overtime) and 64-58.
