Centenary Tops 'Roo Softball in Extras

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College softball team lost an extra innings heartbreaker on Saturday, falling 6-5 to visiting Centenary College in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The 'Roos are now 11-10 overall and 0-4 in conference.

Austin College started the game strong, pushing three runs across in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. Carrie Johnson started things off with a two-run single that plated Tori Fowler and Elizabeth Preston, and Johnson would come around to score on a double by Hannah King. Centenary got a run back in the third, but another RBI double by King pushed Austin College's lead to 4-1 after three complete innings. 

The Ladies cut the margin to 4-2 in the fourth, and in the fifth, two runs would come around to even things up at four runs apiece. Preston hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to put Austin College back on top, but in the top of the seventh, Centenary managed to get the tying run home, forcing extra innings. After a scoreless eighth, the Ladies went on top for the first time in the game on an RBI double by Catherine Stokes in the top of the ninth, and Austin College was unable to counter in the bottom half of the inning.

Alexus Johnson took the loss for Austin College, giving up six runs - five earned - on 10 hits in 8.2 innings of work. King, Preston, and Fowler each had a pair of hits to lead Austin College at the dish. Emma Shepherd got the win for Centenary, giving up one run on three hits in 6.0 innings in relief.
