'Roo Swimming Tops Centenary in Regular Season Finale

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Austin College men's and women's swim teams earned a combined victory in their final regular season meet of the 2023-24 campaign on Saturday, topping Centenary College 207-176 overall with the men outscoring the Gents 113-65 while the women were edged 111-94.

The men's 200 medley relay team of Kamil Murugan, Tyler McDermott, Zane Eklund, and Alex Lai got things off to a strong start with a first place finish, coming in with a time of 1:47.34, while the women's team of Sammi Thiele, Cassidee Levine, Izzy Schultze, and Lola Barcus-Schafer came in second in that event with a time of 2:04.79.

The 'Roo men swept the 100 backstroke, with JonAustin Blaine coming in first with a time of 59.66, while Barcus-Schafer notched a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke, touching with a time of 1:20.43 with Levine right behind her at 1:23.09.

McDermott added another win in the 100 breastroke on the men's side, coming in with a time of 1:07.18, and Thiele took first in the women's 200 butterfly with a time of 2:24.41. Levine added a first place finish for the women in the 50 freestyle, finishing with a time of 28.80, and David Stanford gave the men another win with a time of 55.71 in the 100 free.

Izzy Schultze took first place in the 200 back with a time of 2:37.06, while Blaine gave the men first place points in that same event with a time of 2:15.84, and McDermott added a win in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:33.62. Thiele picked up another first place finish in the 200 individual medley, coming in with a time of 2:13.14, finishing an astounding 23 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.

Lai also picked up a win in that same event on the men's side, touching with a time of 2:09.82, and the 'Roos won the 200 free relay on both the men's and women's sides to wrap up the meet. Thiele, Levine, Barcus-Schafer, and Jordan Armstrong earned their win with a time of 1:52.21, while Lai, Murugan, Eklund, and Tim Smith posted a time of 1:35.184.
