Five From 'Roo Football Earn All-ASC

DALLAS, Texas - Jaylon Talton was named one of three recipients of the American Southwest Freshman of the Year Award and Colton Gerken earned second team All-ASC, as well as being named to the ASC Outstanding Sportsman Team, to highlight five players who earned All-Conference recognition for their play in the 2023 season.

Along with Gerken and Talton, who was named honorable mention All-ASC in addition to his Freshman of the Year accolade, other 'Roos to earn All-ASC recognition include Jarrett Pleasant, a third team pick, as well as Max Walstad and Jeremiah Contreras, who were both named honorable mention All-ASC picks.

Gerken, a senior linebacker from Grand Prairie, finished sixth in the ASC with 67 tackles despite missing a pair of games, including 6.0 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks. He also had five pass breakups, as well as a pair of interceptions.

Pleasant, a senior safety from Magnolia, finished third on the team with 56 tackles, including 4.0 tackles-for-loss, while intercepting a pair of passes and coming away with five pass breakups in nine games played this season.

Talton, a freshman quarterback from Arlington, was named both Tri-Freshman of the Year and honorable mention All-ASC after leading the 'Roos in both passing yards and rushing yards. Talton threw for 1,220 yards and six touchdowns while also rushing for 245 yards.

Walstad, a senior defensive tackle from Highland Village, closed out the season with 28 tackles, including 5.5 tackles-for-loss and a pair of sacks.

Contreras, a junior cornerback from Crandall, had 17 pass breakups this season and was also fifth on the team with 46 tackles, and he added both a forced and recovered fumble while starting all 10 games this season.
