Late Surge Lifts 'Roos Past Blackburn

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team completed its weekend sweep of Blackburn College on Sunday, as the 'Roos came from behind for an 18-9 victory over the Beavers. The 'Roos are now 3-6 overall on the year.

Blackburn plated a pair of runs in the top of the first to take an early lead, but Austin College took advantage for multiple defensive miscues to push five runs across in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 5-4 game. Blackburn scored a run in both the second and third innings to trim it to 5-4, but Mason Woodhouse drove in a run and another came home on an error in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-4.

The Beavers erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9-7 lead, but once again the 'Roos were able to capitalize on some defensive errors by Blackburn and squared things up at nine runs apiece after six innings. Brant Stuber knocked in two runs with a ground-rule double in the seventh, and Brandon Hill added an RBI two-bagger before Scott Hosmer blasted a two-run homer in the same inning to make it 14-9 heading into the eighth. The 'Roos added four more runs in the eighth, with Jake Webster driving in a run while Ashton Milton drove in two and Hosmer brought one more across to make it an 18-9 final.

Jackson Chaviers picked up the win in relief, surrendering just one hit in 2.0 innings of work with no runs, and Mahoney finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored to pace the 'Roos at the dish. Branson Vrazel went 3-for-4 as well, scoring twice with a stolen base.
