'Roos Fall in SCAC Tournament Opener

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Austin College women's basketball team saw its season come to a close in the opening round of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday evening, falling 57-49 to Schreiner University. The 'Roos finish the year with an overall record of 9-17.

Turnovers plagued the 'Roos throughout, finishing with 27 in the game that Schreiner was able to turn into 27 points. The Mountaineers also limited Austin College to 1-of-11 shooting in the third quarter, and the 'Roos finished the game knocking only 3-of-18 attempts from beyond the arc. Austin College led 13-9 late in the first quarter, before Schreiner's Brie Sosa knocked down a pair of threes to make it 15-13 after the opening frame. The 'Roos took a 24-19 lead on a Lauren Traylor basket with 1:50 left in the second quarter, but the Mountaineers once again closed the period strong, scoring six straight to go on top 25-24.

That scoring streak continued into the third, with Schreiner scoring the first six points to push the margin to 31-24 before Amarys Cuellar hit a pair of free throws to get the 'Roos on the board with 5:46 on the clock. Austin College would close the gap to 32-30 on two made free throws by Raylee McDonald with just under three minutes left in the quarter, but Schreiner ended the frame with a 36-32 lead. Cuellar hit a three and Naomi Anamekwe scored midway through the fourth to cut it to 42-39, but an 8-3 run put the Mountaineers ahead 50-42 with two and a half minutes left to play. Austin College twice cut the lead to five, but was unable to get any closer in the closing moments of the game.

Cuellar led the 'Roos with 13 points and added six rebounds, four assists, and two steals, and Anamekwe came off the bench to score 11 points to go along with eight rebounds and a pair of assists. Traylor chipped in six points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two blocks, while Schreiner was led by Sosa's 16 points and eight boards.
