'Roos Notch Non-Conference Win over ABU

SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team controlled right from the start, scoring the first basket and never giving up the lead in a 77-62 win over visiting Arlington Baptist University on Tuesday evening in Hughey Gym. The 'Roos are now 8-15 overall on the year, and have won three of their last four games.

Grace Moothart knocked down a three just seven seconds into the game and the 'Roos never looked back, going on top 14-2 midway through the opening quarter. Arlington Baptist chipped away at the margin, but the 'Roos still led 20-17 at the end of the first. The lead grew to 37-25 at halftime, as Brooklyn Matthews and Kaylee Lewis each scored five points in the second quarter to pace Austin College heading into halftime.

The deficit dropped to 54-45 heading into the fourth quarter, but the 'Roos pulled away down the stretch, getting their largest lead of the game on a basket by Avory Miller to make it 72-55 with just over two minutes left. Austin College would cruise from there, picking up the 15-point non-conference victory. Matthews posted a double-double for the 'Roos, scoring 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting and adding 12 rebounds as well as three blocked shots. Moothart hit 4-of-7 from long range on her way to 14 points, with that shooting performance pushing her into first in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in three-point percentage. Miller came off the bench to chip in 10 points, and Amarys Cuellar dished out a team-best five assists. Branasia Brazelton led ABU with 18 points and Jakayla Bradford had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
