SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College softball team split its doubleheader with Schreiner University on Tuesday, topping the Mountaineers 5-4 in game one before falling 7-4 in game two. The 'Roos are now 13-11 overall and 3-5 in SCAC play after the twin bill.

In game one, Schreiner jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an error in the second, and the Mountaineer lead grew to 4-0 when three runs came across in the third. That would remain the score until the bottom of the fourth, when Jaylin Clevenger knocked in a run to get the 'Roos on the board, and Kat Wright doubled home a pair of runs to bring Austin College to within a run.

The 'Roos weren't done in the inning, with Sophia Hernandez and Delaney England each singling home a run to complete the five run frame and make it a 5-4 game in favor of Austin College. Neither team would score again in the game, and Sophia Hernandez would get the victory after tossing 4.0 scoreless innings in relief. Hernandez also finished the game 1-for-2 at the plate, while Lauren Mara paced the offense with a 2-for-3 performance.

In the second game, it was the 'Roos who struck first with a three run second inning to take a big early lead. Raquel Vara got things started with an RBI single, and after Kierra Gaither came home on a failed attempt to catch Vara stealing, Vara would score the third run of the frame to make it 3-0. That's how things would remain until the fourth, when three runs came home for Schreiner to square things up.

The Mountaineers would take their first lead of the game in the fifth, plating two runs to make it a 5-3 game, and after Kylee Fowler singled home a run for Austin College in the fifth to cut it to a 5-4 game, Schreiner would tack on two more runs in the seventh to push it to a 7-4 margin.

Tori Herrera took the loss for Austin College, surrendering five runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Gaither went 2-for-2 to lead the 'Roos, who were limited to just five hits in the game.
